Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society Meeting
Community Event
Thursday, September 12, 2024 thru Tuesday, September 24, 2024
Civil War buffs and family researchers will be able to enjoy noted historian, Charles Hammett, at the next meeting of the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society at 6 o'clock on Sept 24th at the Donald W. Reynolds Library. Mr. Hammett is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, a retired educator from Mtn. Home Schools and a lifelong student of history. He will be speaking about "Finding and Exploring Your Family Story," with emphasis on sources, from the War Between The States to the early 1900's. This presents a great opportunity for attendees to learn about some of the basic resources for starting their own family research. The public is always invited to attend.
The Society remains active within the community. As part of their historic preservation mission, the Society has begun working with members of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program toward grant funding of needed repairs to the historic Casey House at the Fairgrounds. The Casey House is the oldest house in Mtn. Home and was constructed by Col Randolph Casey, one of the earliest settlers to this area in 1858. It was placed on The National Register in 1975.
New exhibits continue to be assembled at the Society's new Baxter County Historical Museum at 300 Bomber Blvd. The exhibit area will be a work in progress as artifacts are being assembled for the Nov 7th formal grand opening. The public is encouraged to visit as there is much to enjoy already. Hours of operation are 10-4 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Volunteers are invited to join this entertaining endeavor.
As a non-profit organization, fundraising is always important. The Society will be participating in the upcoming city-wide yard sale on October 4th and 5th. Donations of items for the Society to sell would be appreciated and can be dropped off at the museum at 300 Bomber Blvd during regular hours of 10-4 Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. For more information contact Lisa Coleman at (870) 421-7504 or Sonny Sharp at (870)-701-3332.
